She's not just a generic anime girl, if she was she would almost definitely be Fire-themed, since she's standing right by the Fire starter. There's no logic in putting a generic grass-themed character next to the Fire starter. The cooking thing is way too weak to justify that for a character that someone just made up on the spot.

The fact that literally nothing about her design or presence in the picture clashes with her official design pretty much guarantees they're real. They're virtually identical with each other, it CAN NOT be a coincidence.

The only way they could not be real is if they were really old drawings back from when Mallow was still being worked on as well. But even then it seems super-unlikely that they're that old, yet Mallow's design hasn't been changed at all.

Maybe this art was simply drawn up quickly to show to investors, and were not finalized til given the okay or told to scrap. Mallow's design and character traits were most likely established by this point because NPCs are easy to complete in a short amount of time compared to the starters.

That said, it's still reasonable to assume that these designs are fake, despite what most of /vp/ thinks. For instance, it's totally possible that the evos in the image aren't real, but the leaker knew about Mallow and threw her in to make the leak more credible. Or, they might just be early designs that won't make it to the final game.

Now that the Kalos season is over, they gotta start working on the new one. Reference sheets like these help the animators keep the characters consistent with their original designs.

The scene of Mallow and Ash watching Litten could be a future scene in the anime. This implies that Mallow is Ash's new traveling companion, and her love for cooking does fulfill the classic archetype of "funny cook" like Brock did.

This also implies that the designs have been finalized. I doubt such reference sheets that are highly detailed and contain anime characters would be made for designs that were still awaiting approval. These were probably already decided on, and now they're preparing reference sheets for the anime.

I remember watching this mortal kombat DVD where they talked about the history and development of the games. At one point they talk about how they finished up Sindel's design and hadn't come up with a name for her, so they called her "La Muchacha" until they came up with a name. I'm not saying that's always the case with every video game designer, but I think it is plausible that the names haven't been decided on hey, whereas the designs are finished.

And it makes sense. Coming up with a design takes a much longer time than coming up with a name. A name is a simple fix. But deciding on a design takes tons of concept art and there are so many factors to consider.

Imagine if you're trying to produce the next season of Pokemon with brand new characters. The designs would have to be the first ones completed, before names.

It's logical. If you scrapped a design you would have to go over the whole concept/creation process again. Going back to the drawing board and redoing scenes for new designs would just take up too much time. A name can change back and forth.

So they prepared these reference sheets for the animators to start working on the show. The animation part is probably the part that takes the longest to complete. Once the show is animated, it's a matter of editing and dubbing and all that. As far as names go, they'd only have to add it to the script.

I can see why there would be pressure to complete the designs first before deciding on names.

I don't believe they will appear early on in the series. I think these are just meant to help the designers for those later episodes when these Pokemon make their debuts.

I imagine that the animators are already working on the show, and that's why they'll need these reference sheets for those later episodes.

I think it's also possible that the names have been chosen just recently, and that the sheets we're looking at were drawn up before the names were chosen. We did get these sheets back in July or June, I believe.

I wouldn't be surprised if the animators received such reference sheets for other new Pokemon. But I think whoever leaked these knew they only had one chance to leak something, so they decided to leak the one thing that would have the most impact: the starter evolutions. I don't think any of the leaks, whether real or not, have sparked as much passionate and intense response from the fanbase as these evolutions have. It's really exciting to see actually.

They may not need these for the first arc, but they'll need them at some time. It could be that they're preparing for the second one. Not necessarily animating it, but preparing storyboards and such.

However, given all the evidence, I would be inclined to believe these are real. Of course, we're not going to truly know until the evolutions are officially announced.
