For those who don't understand, you have to realize: this is Ash now. He's not 'the inexperienced rookie underdog' anymore, nearly everyone he loses to has been there less than he has.
Ash is 'the old guy who has been fighting for 20 years and still cannot win' now.

Don't forget, Ash is an old experienced trainer who can't win the big leagues at his homeland; so he travels the world and goes on to beat all manner of beginners so he gets a shot at that other nation's league.
It's like a guy whose been boxing for years going to the beginner circuit of the next town over every time he loses instead of moving on to circuits and competitions more fitting of his age.
Imagine you're starting the game with your level 6 starter when all of a sudden...
