The Pokemon Anime writers pussied out. Simple as.

Of course they're going to make Ash beat Alain at a later point, that is painfully obvious you idiot. They'll let Ash win in an unimportant match as some sort of "revenge". But it won't be revenge, it will be a pathetic attempt from the writers to salvage the wreck and justify him losing the League.
But the fact Ash lost in the most important match shows that the writing is cliched, and repetitive. Ash always loses when it matters most.

The writers couldn't just let Ash win, it would mean the end of their own job.
The writers were SELFISH, and have shown the anime for what it is, a very poorly written show.

Well, story-wise it kinda isn't. The whole prophecy about memefrog was about him saving Kalos from a crisis, not about winning the league. And that's what's going to happen in the Team Flare arc, which has been planned to be the true climax of the XY series since before XY&Z aired. Too bad nobody cares about it after today's episode

It's just this time Ash wasn't losing relatively unimportant battles, he was losing the Pokemon League.

The writers decided to expose themselves on the highest stage. They let him challenge the Pokemon League and then just dumped him as they always do.

This is the anime's end of popularity, mark my words.
The writers fucked up by ever letting Ash challenge the League, because their poor writing has finally be exposed on a much bigger scale.
