But seriously, what is this all about?
The Japanese official site updated with "Pokemon discovered so far", which includes all the members of the Dratini and Zubat evolutionary lines and their Alola Dex entries. Twitter hinted that there might be something yet to be revealed here.
It's been a rough day for a lot of fans, let's have some good old-fashioned speculation. Dragonite is one of my favorite Pokemon, and Crobat is a brobat. I am really curious to see what's going on here.

It just doesn't seem like something worth teasing in a special tweet. Adding it to the website, maybe, but we had already seen them in trailers. Off the top of my head at least Zubat, Crobat, and Dragonite have been shown in non-Alola form.
Maybe they're story relevant? Skull clearly packs some of the Zubat family with them.

I could see Megas happening, maybe postgame. If Synchro is implemented somehow that could be it. The tease being ZUBAT instead of CROBAT is extra weird for any potential power-up bullshit.

I thought today's episode killed the Synchro meme.
If it was something being teased and hyped up for Sun/Moon Ash's Greninja would have not jobbed like that. It would have had a good showing before losing.
They wouldn't make the new mechanic they're teasing about look inferior to Mega Evolution.

To play devil's advocate, the full intensity of it could be yet to come in the Zygarde/Flare arc. Perhaps someone finally explains to Ash what's going on, how it works, what the giant, Z-move-like shuriken was all about.
I am doubting Synchro more and more each day and was never too sure about it to begin with, but the series ain't over yet. The hype could be yet to pay off.
