I honestly think a new protagonist or some drastic change would revive the series. Ash and Pikachu have to be shoved in SOME way, but I'd like to see the series focus on a new hero in Alola. Tobias existence is complete bullshit, everyone nowadays tries to rationalize it as some kind of meta character taking a shot at the game players who stomp the game with legendaries, but that's just delusion, he was a bullshit character designed to stop Ash from winning and that's why they gave him the legendaries. The games don't really need to keep an upward trend, nor is it reasonable for them to.
It just needs to beat the direct competition. Right now, that's Yokai. And it does, firmly and convincingly.
I think the only victory Yokai claimed over Pokemon was it out-selling ORAS in Japan late-2014 for a month window. But that's just Japan sales, and that's a direct sequel vs a remake. Pokemon shits on Yokai worldwide, and even since, Yokai has petered in Japan. The recent game sold 600k units opening week.
