The problem with Ash saving the world is that shit doesn't matter to him, because for some reason televised sporting events matter more for his self-image and worth as a pokemon trainer than encounters with god or aversion of the death of all mankind. And that's only if you count movies as canon, when only a few of them definitely are due to direct tie-ins to the series.
