Pokemon the anime has always been about the journey, and not who wins arbitrary sports tournament #550. Alain's been searching for his purpose, searching for meaning go everything he's been doing, and now it's all being rendered moot before his very eyes.

Ash and Alain have been opposite numbers since the start. Ash cares about winning, but it doesn't define him. Alain defined himself by his quest, and then by what he saw of himself in Ash, and now he's being set up to question all of that. Look at him after the battle, he's still sitting there pondering what it all meant while Ash is being greeted warmly by friends.

Even his desire to help Mairin and her Chespin invited disaster.

That's a hell of a lot more interesting to me than who is or isn't the champion. This whole thing is about exploring what this crazy adventure is all about, through a pure hearted boy who wants to gather friends and have new adventures being set opposite young man who doesn't even know what he's fighting for.
