Embarrassing question time:
If you don't evolve a Pokemon immediately upon that becoming possible, is the resulting Pokemon forever weaker?
For example, Butterfree has higher stats than Metapod. If I have two Metapods, both identical in all aspects, and I evolve one as soon as possible and I wait 1 level to evolve the other, will the latter be forever inferior?
No.
No. The base stats change. As long as they have the same IVs, EVs, etc, upon Metapod B's evolution, then Butterfree A&B will be identical once more.

No, the one that evolves later's stats will be boosted to be equal with earlier evolver's when it evolves

It can be better to wait to evolve in certain circumstances because most pokemon learn moves at lower levels then they would if they evolved.
No, and that's not that embarrassing. My friend who played since gen 2 thought the same until I corrected him.
OP here, thanks guys. I have been playing since Gen 1 and always assumed that was the case but wasn't sure and after a while I was too deep in to ask.
This will change how I play for sure
