As it's he got too many Pokémon in BW in addition to a bunch of evolution, for one, both Unfezant and Leavanny evolved twice, Krookodile(though he met it as Sandile), Boldore and Pigmite evolved once, Snivy, Oshawott, Scraggy and Palpitoad didn't evolve even though they could've had evolved. I think it didn't play to their favor.

Well, I measure Serena's development by the contrast between the current Serena and the former Serena.

From a girl that tagged along with her crush without a dream, to a girl that literally challenged the Queen, and I liked how even when she was determined to do better after cutting her hair she still had problems, and she became better after meeting Elle herself and introduce the theme of what it means to be a performer. Her development there was a gradual and culminated in her winning her first tripokalon.

I find it funny that even when she challenged Elle, she still didn't get what it meant what it means to be a performer: to give smiles to everyone and to be relied on and not just receive them, until Yashio told her. Her development continues after her failure where she determines to be the one who gives advices, to be relied on, and give smiles, and is shown in the Snowbelle Arc during Ash's depression.

She had to fight just to even BEGIN her dream, and now she's dazzling stadiums and proving herself alongside her Pokemon like Ash does with battles. Her development and Ash are intertwined. They save each other out of their darkest moments. I think its better that way, because it would have felt odd for her to go from no dream to achieving it so quickly. I'd rather we get deeper looks at her character, determination and personality through moments with Ash.

All that talk about May, Dawn and Serena illustrate why Misty and Iris are the worst companions.

They both have a set goal in mind right at the start, to become masters of a single type of Pokemon. However, neither of them actually do anything with this. Misty at least mostly sticks to water Pokemon aside from Togepi, but Iris ended up with more non-Dragon types than Dragons on her team.

Both characters are basically just there, and spend most of that time shitting on Ash while not being that great as trainers themselves. Misty only really starts changing once Togepi enters the picture while Iris is, well, Iris.

Well the anime was originally planned to end with Kanto. At the time Misty for a 80-episode or so companion worked well. Then in Orange Islands they tried to make Misty a love interest all saga.

Misty started having problems a bit after the S.S. Anne and when she got Togepi. They also didn't really pull much with the love interest during Orange Islands, like five or so episodes out of 30+, then Misty pretty much didn't do much until Whirl Cup, and even that didn't cut it.

I definitely never saw May as funny. Just more balanced, which contributed to the yawn factor imo. That's largely because nothing quite has the same pilot-like carefree charm and animation quirks that Misty rode off of. Pokemon generally isn't that funny afterwards.
