When all we knew about was the base evos for the starters, I fucking despised Popplio. Still do, really. I am not exaggerating, easily the worst base starter in the entire franchise.

However. I love the siren evolution. Love it. Historically I have never actually kept my starter pokemon through an entire playthrough, I just never really liked any of the deigns. But, if the siren seal is real, I will break that pattern with gen 7. Fucking love the idea and the execution.

Mermaid leak isn't that bad desu. Didn't like it at first but it's grown on me.

Exclusively choose Water-starter on first playthroughs since Gen 1 so doesn't matter to me how ugly Popplio becomes. It could turn into a blue turd and I'd still choose it, though I wouldn't necessarily like it. Oshawott's line was possibly the first time where I'd dislike a Water starter line, but Samurott is cool so that turned out well. I'm not fond of Popplio and the leaked final stage, though I find it just a little bit more tolerable than Rapelio after annoying faggots tried to pull a Roothoot with it.

It becoming a mermaid is the only reason I'm picking Popplio.

When the starters were first announced, I chose Popplio right then and there. Even though Rowlet and Litten were adorable, something just warmed me up to Popplio. I think if it was any other water starter, I would've gone with Litten. But Popplio's design was just so interesting, and full of promise and potential. And I actually found it to be really cute. Still do.

My actual assumption was that it was going to evolve into an elegant sea lion. I expected something like the picture I attached. I never expected or assumed it was going to evolve into something like Ballio. Deep down I had a hunch it was going to go down the elegant and majestic route.

I didn't care that most people didn't seem to like it. Knowing Game Freak and having played since Blue, I knew they were going to do something awesome with Popplio.

When Entermaid was first revealed, I was skeptical. I didn't want to get my hopes up, because I absolutely loved the design.

Entermaid exceeded my expectations. This is exactly the kind of evolution I wanted, and more. I think the feminine design is refreshing, and I love the mermaid theme.

Now with all the overwhelming evidence that it's real, I am very happy. I think it's going to be my favorite starter of all time.

My honest opinion I'm a Poppmaid fan through and through.

But I honestly thought Popplio would evolve into a circus strongman instead of an actual clown. But when I seen some ideas for a clown-like evo for Popplio I quickly changed my mind because they all looked tacky and predictable. They literally had the "its just gets bigger" syndrome. With water that defined physics. Ballio was a cool concept and it was different. But then I realized from a marketing perspective it would be difficult. Design wise and conceptually it's an A+ though.

But Poppmaid surprised me, it's different and something I didn't expect from Popolio. Though it's design is feminine I can see it happening it fits the entertainer aspect of it's design.

I wanted something similar to Samurott but better.

I always hated popplio from the start. Always looked doofy to me with little potential for a neat design later on. Ballio triggers the fuck out of my clourophobia and only confirms my suspicion if legit. If it turns out to be QT mermaid I'll slightly regret hating the doofy fucker but not much.

I really just wanted popplio to become something amazing, especially since everyone kept hating on it so much. I know a lot of people still hate on entermaid, but it's a beautiful design and actually made me switch from choosing litten when I saw it was pretty much confirmed. I couldn't be happier with it, honestly.

Just because we don't personally like a design doesn't mean it's inherently bad. Sure, you can come up with a formal and objective explanation of why a design is bad, and that's fair. But at the end of the day, one man's trash is another man's treasure. If Game Freak chose to go with this design it's because they liked it, and knew that other fans would too.

Honestly, neither of the starters gave off a "feminine" look. Rowlett looked simply cute, but not feminine and Litten just keeps its cool while Popplio seemed awfully silly. I thought, heck, pick Popplio while we're at it.

And turns out something completely different and quite feminine looking.

I mean, I'm all up for any design, be it male or female or whatever the heck, I just kinda wish they kind of hinted at it, even if barely? Or maybe the pink nose was already a hint, but I never thought much about it though. Its eyes don't look all that fairy-ish or feminine either, just pretty normal. It seems pretty bulky too, which made it look less feminine too compared to Entermaid's much more thinner silhouette (it kind of reversed proportions wise when you look at it, she looks like she barely has bulk in her neck and chest and seems wider on the belly/hip/tail area).

I know there's the whole Oshawott thing, but given its shell thing, I already assumed he'd look something SIMILAR to Samurott and strong looking, albeit never predicted the whole quadruped thing which was quite unexpected.

When the starters were revealed, I didn't necessarily dislike Popplio, but I thought the other two were more interesting. However, Entermaid is by far my favorite of the three leaked starters (although I like all three), and definitely the one I'll be going with for my first playthrough. I love the sea, I have since I was a child, and I also love myths and legends. I've wanted a mermaid pokemon for a long time. I'm not a furfag, but I do enjoy elegant designs. It even keeps the 'circus theme' that everyone was so sure they saw, by becoming a performing mermaid, which were common hoax attractions, and are common themes for burlesque acts. Hell, she even keeps to the alchemy thing (undines, water elemental spirits often associated with mermaids and selkies, were first named in Paracelsus' alchemical works). I didn't want just another seal/sea lion pokemon, I wanted something different, and Entermaid delivered. The haters (who will undoubtedly call me a furfag, simply for liking the design), can fuck themselves with a rusty trident.

Popplio's pretty much accepted as the weakest design, so when i first saw it i was holding out hope that the final would be impressive.

Starters have pretty much universally ended with a big, intimidating design. Pairing that with Pop's clown theme, i was legitimately really looking forward to seeing how they'd make those work together without going into full edge mode clown. I liked Ballio for that reason. Never thought it was real, but still the design was a great blend of the clown theme and the big impressive starter i was expecting.

Then they just threw that entire thing away, told me to go fuck myself, then stapled a bunch of shells and out of place pink spikes to it just to rub it in my face.

Yeah, not thrilled.

So just making sure I'm up to date with how these starter leaks were confirmed real.

So chinese leak, which talks about a bunch of stuff, and gives descriptions of the starters.

A leaked concept image appears of the three starter final forms, which match the chinese descriptions.

An official trailer reveals a character that is seen in the starter concept art, as well as confirms a lot of major aspects of the games that were spoken of in the chinese leak (no gyms).

Sea cucumber and Mushroom pokemon revealed, which were also spoken of in the leak.

I'm just going to lay my thoughts on Ballio right here on the table because I always see these threads and never give a full assed response.

I've seen fakemon after fakemon but very few of them gave me as much of an extreme negative reaction as the Alola starter mock ups. They were so un-apologetically edgy that I couldn't even suspend my disbelief for a second like I did with the other leaks. It was immediately obvious between the Assassin's Creed owl and that long ass panther thing. They were both hideous.

But neither of them held a candle to Ballio.

Ballio's the worst fakemon I've ever seen. It transcends bad fakes and becomes bad art in general. I hate how Popplio's collar suddenly juts from his neck and makes him look he's got an iron fucking jaw. I hate the stupid ass hair that makes him look less like a circus performer and more like John Wayne Gacy. I hate how his facial markings and shit eating expression make him look like a Juggalo more than anything else about his design. It just completely removes the innocent, fun attitude Popplio presents and replaces it with circus strongman bullshit.

And finding out people liked this piece of shit was even worse. It's one thing to take a dump on a page, it's another to be the asshole that laps it up. How can you have such bad taste?

I think that there's a gigantic lack of what Ballio meant to me. I feel like in the later gens we have way too many cute pokemons that evolve into even cuter things, while the badass or weird pokemon numbers keep gettting lower for some reason.
Ballio was different, simple as that. I'm tired of training fluff balls, Popplio looked goofy and I thought that he would following the trend. Instead he turned into another Gardevoir.

to be honest, if Popplio ever had such a clown theme, I'd rather see him turn from a little apprentice (total goofy adorable klutz, but still knows a thing or two) to novice clown (can already do some impressive stunts, but still has much to learn, already kind of prideful) to a total complete pierrot/harlequin/magician that can grab the crowd's attention without barely trying (learned several skills, including acrobatics and can ultimately control water at will and in a blissful way), but still retains his playful demeanor and might get a little carried away (the site made mention of Popplio often getting carried away), but is a big lovable oaf who means no harm.

That's kind of reaching. Its design or at least, what I had witnessed, seemed more to lend itself more to the pierrot face wise and even that's stretching. I never meant to stifle any sort of criticism towards the design of Entermaid. Judging from the OP's first post, I assumed this was going to be a more formal and academic discussion of why or why not you like Entermaid, and such.

I was hoping for a slim, acrobatic design. As in, the final evo would always be in a pose similar to Popplio's standing, on its tail. I thought that was fairly realistic for a guess.

Ballio bothers me because it looks like the artist incorporated a creepy clown theme. I just don't think making a starter creepy works unless there's undertones of that throughout the whole evolution, especially for a starter.

I was going to pick Litten, but I'm unfortunately put off by Luchalitten's design. I definitely understand the theme it's going for, though. It's not a bad design, but the hulking, strong Pokemon like Machamp and Tyrantrum have never been my thing. I'm incredibly neutral towards the archer. I don't dislike it in any way, but it doesn't interest me at ALL. Entermaid, though, is easily my favorite. For some reason, I really like the cute and elegant designs the most in Pokemon. I enjoy shit-tier garbage like Skitty and Serperior. Even if there stats and movepools are bad, I like playing with them because they're my favorite designs. I considered picking Litten and not evolving it or not using a starter at all, but Entermaid is slowly becoming a favorite design of mine each passing day.
