My nephew plays Pokemon with me, he is under the age of 13. He's hyped as fuck whenever I show him the new stuff, thinks Wishiwashi is a total badass in school form and can't wait to use it.

Everykid I see playing pokemon is at least 10, which is old enough to not be retarded in terms of forming a strategy in a game. Now it's quite possible that younger kids play it, especially in Japan, but aren't the asians supposed to be smarter that the average 'murican? It's a fact they value education more than we do and hold it in higher regard. I see no reason for the games to not have evolved to minumum basic jrpg levels of difficulty.

Was that ever an opinion that people have?

Adults don't care whether something is "serious" or not.
“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”
― C.S. Lewis
They like what they like, they don't need it to super serious and edgy to validate it.

And the reason Nintendo is dying is precisely because they keep catering to Japan's market, which becomes more irrelevant by the day, instead of trying to step up their game.

There's that meme again. Just like with Friendship Is Magic, most of its fanbase is indeed children, you just think it's more adults because they're the ones discussing it on the Internet.
