The anime has a really predictable writing style. Generally multiple losses stacked against a character, whether it be Ash or someone he's up against, build up to a win at the league. So if for example, Gary beats Ash twice over the course of a series and Ash doesn't land a win, chances are Gary is fucked at the league.

Ash is in final 2 against Edgelord Supreme right now. He's never beat him once. I'm apprehensive, but if he win's I won't be surprised.
