While I agree two isn't enough, in that battle his Ariados is level 30, so it's likely your first battle with him. We've never battled a team leader around the 3rd badge before. The closest we had was that fight with Jupiter in Eterna City, and she only had 2 pokemon.

See like i feel like it might be semi immersion based - like to him, his pokemon are fine and he can kick ass with them- but then he runs into you, the hero, and gets thrashed.
