I get it, it's not a different pokemon technically, but it's still an odd way for the form to activate. I hope its next form is strong enough to be worth taking up an ability slot

Well, presumably its ability activates at the beginning of battle once it has reached a certain level, in a manner similar to Intimidate or the weather summoning abilities. Is it even possible to prevent that?

This seems to work like Primal Reversion except without an item.

It seems like it's functionally an evolution but with some benefits and downsides, like not having another ability.

If that is the case, why even make it an ability? I don't really see the point of a power up form that activates automatically. What's the point of having a pokemon that is weak but immediately becomes stronger at the beginning of the battle if you don't get a chance to prevent that. Would'nt it make more sense to just have him be strong by default?

Because it's cool. It might justify giving it really good stats and moves since it doesn't have a real ability, and it's suppressable.
