You guys probably don't want to wait until next week to learn the "secret" behind the starters/Rockruff, and I don't like watching you idiots theorize about it, so here we go:

The "secret" is that the starters/Rockruff have two evolutions, one on level-up and one with a stone. From what the professor says in-game, this is to show how close that Pokémon and humans are so close on Alola. They have a humanoid evolution, and a very animalistic evolution.

Rockruff
>At level 24 it evolves into a massive wolf, themed around being a "pack leader." (Rock/Normal)
>With a moon stone it evolves into the werewolf you all know and love (Rock/Dark)

Rowlet
>At level 36 it evolves into an eagle with an absurdly large wingspan. (Grass/Flying)
>With a leaf stone it evolves into the archer, which is actually (Grass/Steel)

Litten
>At level 36 it evolves into a saber-toothed tiger, that injects flammable venom through its fangs so it's (Fire/Poison)
>With a fire stone it evolves into the wrestler (Fire/Dark)

Popplio
>At level 36 it evolves into a sea lion/seal thing that freezes the bubbles it makes and throws them like boulders (Water/Ice)
>With a water stone it evolves into the siren (Water/Fairy)
