Were the original 151 Pokemon designs really "better",

Imo they were more acceptable just because they resembled animals. The new pokemon are just overdesigned. Look at some details of new pokemon.

The 151 were more simple than the later ones, because of hardware limitations. That's it.

Pretty much. Most of them were simple, clean designs. Some were downright lazy sure, and even Gen I had overdesigned shit but most of them just hit the sweet spot between being too lazy and overdesigned.

I liked how the older ones look like they could evolve form today's animals.

I mean, by limitation. Red and Blue designs were horrendous, then we got the anime and yellow, and by Gold and Silver things were much much better already, but the 151 original designs were plain and simple in comparison, and a whole bunch of them were ugly as all fucks. Just look at Nidoking or Kangaskhan or Rhydon, they were the most "overdone" of the era and they were plain, maybe because they had to keep the pallete simple and because they had just so many pixels to use.

dunno tho, maybe we just used our imagination more back then.

I think Gen 1 and Gen 2 are just OK. I think you just could feel if the pokemon is strong or weak by its design. And almost every pokemon was usable.

Just tell me if you would like to use Probopas? There are lots of pokemon which feels weak - i.e. Plusle, minun, and those two fucking bees from Gen3

I think the main reason why Gen1 is "superior" is just because some of the new pokemons are just to fill pokedex. I wouldnt mind not having plusle and minun. Or even the fucking Castform or Luvdisc.

"Original 151" just stuck strongly to the inital concept of Pokemon making.
Take real-life animal/object, add fantasy elements, keep the resemblance to the source material as much as possible.
Later GF began stepping from this principle, and things like Zorua's and Fennekin's cone legs, scaleless fishes and other abominations started to arise.

I think the problem with many newer pokemon is, that they are a just spheres with 2D details slapped onto it...
I mean look at Scraggy, its head is a sphere with its eyes and mouth being basically stickers.

Don't gen1 me, I know there a lazy designs in gen1, but still, even though it's just a inverse pokeball, its eyes and mouth have at least some death with shadows or details like that

Further more, this design choice is more of an exception in gen1, whereas you would find more examples in newer gens

Each gen has it's strong and weak designs. GF puts out a lot of wacky stuff, but still has simple designs too. A lot of designs have a interesting backstory, like Jynx being based of a mountain witch legend and not a nigger like we all thought.

Gen 3 was the last gen with a good design:bad design ratio greater than 1.

Gen 4 was a fall back and most of gen 4's good designs were cross evolutions anyway.
