So i played Uranium for about 2 days now, and I think I say it was a waste of time for me and the developers. It's not bad, really, but its not worth 2 or 3 years in the making in my opinion. If pokémon garnet will end up being just like this I won't go any further than the first gym. And I've been following garnet fo a very long time.
By the way, Uranium is better than Zeta/Insurgence, that's for sure. I believe it is at least worth a try. Maybe.

Honestly, you get used to editing things with all the files separated, once you learn where everything is. When I do those music covers I sometimes post here, I have to edit three different files separate from the audio file itself just to put it in the ROM (audio.asm to put the file in, and audio/music_pointers.asm and constants/music_constants.asm to give the song the proper pointers and be able to use it in the rest of the disassembly). That probably sounds excessive but it's just editing a line or two in each, takes like 30 seconds total even if I don't already have the files open.

Honestly, the biggest issue with that map in my eyes is it looks too open for the Game Boy. Remember the Game Boy has a resolution of 160x144, which means in-game you'll only see 10x9 tiles at once.

Honestly though, 2x2 tiles isn't that limiting if you make custom tilesets. I know you can have tilesets as large as 256 tiles, and hacks like XY Naturia have really expansive-looking sets despite being traditional hacking. I've never worked with tileset editing though, so maybe I'll have to try it myself so I can help. The only maps I made were a couple maps I added for test purposes (the test being whether I could add new maps to the game without replacing older ones).

All things Essentials considered, pretty comfy. Rival is kind of annoying (and not in the fun way,) some of the fakemon are a little weird or stupid (and others I absolutely adore,) but it's been fun to play through and I'm glad to have something to tide me over in the pre-S/M drought. I'd say it's worth a download to see if you're into it, at the least.

Dark Energy has a fuckton of sidequests. It's currently unfinished, but the current beta has about the same level of content as GSC; by the time the east half of the region is finished it should be huge.

Only play it if you can handle a little cringey dialogue and love huge routes, though.

Uranium finally released, it's been bretty good so far if you can handle fakemon. Alchemist has long-ass routes, if that's not a problem it's honestly pretty nice, but it's not done yet. (It's playable to postgame, but the postgame is still being worked on.)

I've never tried covering a song with this style and I'm just asking for general opinions rather than a specific style. The MIDI I ripped from Black 2 isn't as helpful as most of them, it's like some of the pitches are off in the MIDI compared to the actual song so I have to check the original version more often than usual.

Well, it depends on what kind of style you're going for. Emulating gen 4 or 5? 96x96, though most Pokemon are below 80x80. Ethereal Gates goes with like 192x192, where the sprites are sized at that instead of just being enlarged when playing the game at RMXP's normal size. Uranium also goes for 192x192 backsprites.

What platform are you working in?
If its Essentials, size hardly matters if you position them correctly. Try to stay anywhere between 64 and 128 if you doing anything remotely similar to the canon games.

Tiles are 32x32 in rows of 8
You're probably going to scale this up from 16x16 by a factor of 2 to make spriting quicker though.
The cheapest way to go about doing this is constructing a grid of 16 x 16 squares 128 wide which are in alternating stark colors for a background.
Try to make them specific like (0,255,0)green and (0,0,255)blue, so that you don't use them by accident.
Back it up and sprite over it Then just erase you background in Gimp or PS.

Those are only the 5th gen animated sprites that are animated by frame, not the 4th gen ones from HGSS.

Holy shit, how does anyone make a hack? This is the most convoluted, user-unfriendly undertaking I've ever experienced. Every new tool or tutorial unleashes a plethora of new problems that don't have answers or the creators must assume you have the vast knowledge necessary to fix them off the bat.


Is there any one master tutorial or beginner's tutorial that doesn't assume you have a degree in engineering? Or is romhacking just that tedious?

Normal is fucking EDGY. It might be edgier than Pokémon Insurgeance. The game starts out fairly normal pardon the pun but like five badges in:

>you meet an old man possessed by an evil spirit
>the spirit enters your body
>you go FULL EDGE
>kill your best friend immediately after it happens
>walk through a hellish route filled with demon NPCs you have to fight, severed heads on poles, etc.
>enter a graveyard town with Lavender Town's theme playing
>meet your "dark side"
>your in-game dialogue is actually edgier than your "dark side"
>by the time your "dark side" asks you to kill five people you've already killed four, including a guy named Apocalypto 555 (555 is supposed to be 666 if you couldn't tell, the hacker didn't want to use 666 for some reason)
>go on a serial murder spree in not-Lavender Town
>almost kill Lance (this game has a Lance fetish by the way, there are like a dozen NPCs that gush about how great he is)
>beta ends with you going through literally hell trying to chase down Lance and kill him
