It is better because they have an excuse for being bad and they might be allowed to develop as a character before being swapped out for another new character next gen. They can have a story arc with an ending. Ash can't because it would mean he couldn't have status quo when he abandons everything from that season to go to the next region. He can bond all he wants about how Paul abandoned Chimchar, almost win the league with Infernape, but then he abandons Infernape with Oak for another 3 generations.

Some of the biggest issues I have with ash are that he shows no progression. Why does he have a box full of pokemon, yet travels to a new region with only Pikachu? What is with that self imposed rule? Why is his Pikachi able to compete with the 8th gym leader of Unova, but gets stomped by the first gym leader of Kalos? Isnt pikachu basicaly a veteran by now its been in literally hundreds of battles. Why the fuck does Ash view Roxie's Koffing with confusion. He used to battle a Koffing EVERY DAY.

With different characters there will be different nuances, even if they all fulfill the goofy, energetic idiot trope (Ash didnt even fit this trope in the beginning of the anime). But at least with a new protagonist we wont wonder why this little has had no progression despite having traveled to 5 regions and battled multiple champion level trainers, legendary pokemon, and having beaten nearly every gym leader.

Id rather have it be more like yugioh or Jojo's where the protagonist's battle style and personalty change each iteration.
