If they did DP again today, I'm almost certain they would have hewn closer to Silver's plotline from HGSS for Paul: basically a Champion (Cynthia in this case, Lance originally) shits on them for being an asshole, and they become progressively more obsessive because their wunderkind unbeatable rival (XY Ash) keeps on destroying them in every encounter and nattering on about love and trust, to the point where he gets disheartened and doesn't even enter the league.

I also feel they don't talk enough about the bad things, which there are, in this show.
