The older artstyle was better, and I do prefer simplistic designs myself, but Pokemon have always had a good mix of girly, realistic, and monster. Even today.

Quite a few of the generation one mons have inconsistent coloration and design elements throughout the years. See: all the sprite coloration differences, fatchu, spiked charmander, blastoise's hatches

I always wondered why the Geodude line, despite looking like they're purely made out of rock didn't weight enough. I think it is just a normal pokemon witha rocky exterior, maybe ground type, like a sandshrew, hence the double typing.

They're not based on kaiju, they just look somewhat similar because they're Japanese monsters, and there are so many kaiju that no matter what you design, there will be a kaiju that somewhat resembles it.
