I'm just recently getting back into playing Pokemon and looking forward to SM. I've been reading about Powersaves and Pokegen. I used to do the fake GTS spoofing back in BW but I'm out of the loop. Can someone explain powersaving and what is needed to do so?

Powersaves is a scam, you're better off looking at the firmware (10.7 or below is the magic number) of your 3ds and seeing if you can install homebrew or custom firmware.

How so? Isn't Powersaves just the modern day of Action Replays and Gamesharks? I just bought the n3DS so I feel kinda skeptical on doing any firmware changes on it.

It is, but you can do so much less with Powersaves, and save editing with homebrew/CFW is free. Well, you do need an SD card reader too.
You can always install menuhax (https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Part-1-%28Homebrew%29 this part of the guide works fine if that's all you're interested in), and then something to extract saves.

Powersaves is ok and all, I own one, but ever since homebrew launcher/custom firmware became a thing I use it less and less.
Was fairly worth it in 2013-2014, but these days you can do better. It does what it does well, but why pay for it these days?

Well just speaking on how a Powersave is just the lesser cousin of what it was, how exactly does it work? Just the same pop in the game card, boot up, pick your codes, then start the game? Is it some shit to do on the PC?

What Powersave model did you have?
I see like a fucking million different titled ones
