I think its more an issue that we are for the first time seeing a lot of these designs in 3d on a game. Obviously pre-Gen 6 designs were created with only 2 dimensions in mind. You can really see what I mean with Blastoise. It's design is actually correct. But the thing with it is we only see the drawing of Blastoise before which is obviously drawn how they want it to appear. It doesn't have to conform exactly to symmetry and stuff since it's a 2 dimensional drawing. They don't have to consider its appearance in 3 dimensions. But we know it's symmetrical, so when they do its 3d model it has to be symmetrical, it's sides are perfectly mirrored, which can make it appear fatter than if it's a drawing at an angle. you can see it in the original stadium blastoise too. It's a similar effect if you were to literally mirror, say, a sideways facing drawing to make it appear like it looks straight on.

Most them are ok, though the colors should be redone to make it more realistic and not so much like the original art gone 3d which gives a huge contrast to the realistic backgrounds
but some of them got really bad ones, like typhlosion, but some of the bad ones are justified, like with wailord
