Shota/Ash was a nice spectacle, but that's about it. Strategy-wise and character interaction-wise it felt somewhat lacking overall compared to what I'd consider the best battles of the show, hell even as a spectacle, I'd say Ash/Diantha II far surpassed it by showing Ash do the seemingly impossible. Ash/Shota's certainly not a bad battle by any means, but I'd consider it rather overhyped.

Ash/Clemont was definitely a good battle, but I never really felt it was all that hype since it felt like the battle was being portrayed as a foregone conclusion more than any other battle considering how much time Clemont spent hyping Ash up before and during the battle. Clemont mixing up his strategy based on his previous battle with Ash was pretty fucking cool though.

Honestly, I want Ash to settle down with a girl at certain point, but with a girl who gets real character development thanks to him and really grows and learns to love him, not with a girl with a stagnant crush since ep. 1. Serena's crush at this moment seems too stagnant. Ash needs someone who could develop a growing relationship.

Putting aside Dragon Ball because the pairings were mostly asspull there, MC from other shonen series almost always ends up with the girl who has the most development in her personality. It doesn't matter if the girl is a tsundere, a stalker, a bitch, a violent, a shrinking violet, a tomboy, an emotionally stunted girl o a normie. As soon as she gets development regarding her relationship with the dense and pure MC, she becomes the almost exclusive endgame.
