The reason being that Ninetales is based on a mythological creature from Japanese culture. The better question is why they didn't already retype normal Ninetales to Fire/Fairy.

I once had a dream that there was a Pikachu with a white fur coat with black spots. A snow Pikachu. This is the closest GameFreak can get to my dream and I'm glad it has come to pass.

I think there is a lot of potential in the concept.

I fucking love the vulpix and the sandshrew line. And since I love ice poke (yes I know they're terrible, thanks, it's just my favorite type) it's even better.

Exeggutor is good in a funny/ironic way. I can see wh they did this. It's a little bit over the top though, but nothing terrible.

Overall I am REALLY pleased with these and if they keep this kind of quality it'll be perfect for me. I'll robably use them way more than the old ones, not that I disliked them.

As for Sandshrew/Sandslash, they seem particularly arbitrary. This is a pokemon that lives in hot, arid deserts.Why, on a hot tropical island with plenty of desert-like areas, would it specifically set out to pick the freezing-cold mountain-top? Aside from that, the designs themselves are really lazy. Just take the originals, change one minor detail, and color them light blue.

Vulpix/Ninetails are even worse in this regard; they're literally just painted white with slightly different texture to their hair.

The main reason that I don't like the recolor alolan forms is that it seems like a super lazy cop-out. It feels like they're saying, "why even bother making new pokemon when we can just recolor old pokemon?". At least with the stupid Exeggute has a different design.

That out of the way, I know exactly what to think, and that is "This is fucking fantastic!" We now have precedent for pre-existing pokemon to get new, permanent forms with type changes, new movepools and interesting new looks. This is like those variant threads that we have popping up all the time but better. A snowy region Vulpix and Sandshrew line and an Exeggcutor that thrives in the sunshine. Just think what other forms we might have of other pokemon! I can't imagine that they'd introduce something so drastic and only have three families utilize it. I'm expecting at least 2-3 more evolutionary lines from previous generations getting Alola forms and they're just keeping them under wraps for more surprise later on.

Regardless, it's a way to give us fresh "new" pokemon without having to create something entirely new. It breathes new life into old favorites, gives them completely new uses, and might even make a pokemon you never wanted to use before desirable. I *really* want them to have more of these in Alola and continue to do so with each new region going forward. It keeps the pokedex from swelling to ridiculous numbers and, frankly, gets me even more hyped than some brand new pokemon. Yeah, new designs and concepts are great, and I want more of those too, but taking a pokemon I was fond of already, giving it a fresh type combo (which can be a previously unused one as well) and a cool new look just gets me pumped. I'm eagerly awaiting a magma/volcano Onix now, or a tropical Sneasle.
