I've said this before, but Serena/Calem should have joined Team Flare.

Have them continue to get depressed and disheartened after you get them for the megastone, then about 2/3s of the way through the game they just vanish. Shauna and co mention their absence, you get a call from Sycamore asking if you've seen them, play it up a bit. Then the next time you run into Team Flare, they're there, sporting the orange and packing a Mega Ring of their own, a gift from Lysandre who "saw their potential", but actually saw an emotionally vulnerable dupe who might slow down the protagonist that's been disrupting their operations.

Let the rival go Mega on you for a few battles, then (because this is a pokemon game after all) have them come to realise they're being used in the climax and turn on Lysandre, maybe holding up the Admins or something while you defeat the big boss.

It wouldn't be an award winning story by any means, but it'd be new to pokemon and 100 times better than "Wow, you keep beating me. I'm sad."

But honestly, all of the XY supporting cast was wasted potential (with the possible exception of Shauna) and could have been something great.

Because passing out is one big fat cop-out. For plenty of trainers it makes sense for you to be able to lose to them without much consequence. Hell, in a world where the games were a bit more the various romhacks you should be expected to lose to gym leaders a couple times. But then you have battles like those against the evil teams. In gen 1 you'd have no idea how Rocket grunts would rough you up after you lost, and in gen 5 Ghetsis is actively out to KILL you DEAD. But instead of implying these things by making some sort of unique game over scene that you don't see with regular trainers, they simply make it the standard for a loss against *any* trainer to mean you pass out, lose some money as a penalty and travel back to the last PokeCenter, with the game world continuing on as if that battle you lost never even happened; the trainer you lost to will challenge you again with the exact same dialogue when you retrace your steps.

The supporting characters in XY are representations of approaches one can have to playing Pokemon.

They're supporting character, to be fair and I only forgot one of them - who was the least developed of the lot (and that's saying something). It could've been a good story - potentially the best one to date with what they had laid out to work with. They just messed it up, I think it has a lot to do with their old habits and them not realising how much work would go in to the changes they made.
I'm actually a little worried they'll mess up the newer ones as well, but there's a whole new approach going on so I'm assuming they've learned their lesson.

There's also a visual representation thing going on where he's red and Bulbasaur is green - names of the games.
Plus, they're complementary colours so it works well visually, and colours were a big part of the games themselves so it sort of works as it being that the Green choice best complements the trainer named Red and vice-versa, you could argue.

Yeah, sort of. The story is still told and its so simple that if you take it all in you'll get it. The storytelling is a mess, though, and especially in the West, a lot of the audience are pretty bad at 'getting' concepts and stuff. It's the same reason why films like Boyhood (as an example of something from around the same time) get tonnes of hate - we've got a lot of people taking a lot of things in but taking them all for granted. Like, look at the threads upon threads of people not understanding a simple design like Bewear.

But XY also does itself no favours in that it's a bit of a mess, so even after reading it fully it still falls flat so you don't feel any real reward from doing so. The story is simple and has potential, but that's as far as it goes, really. I still liked XY all the same.

I mentioned Shauna in an earlier post, to be fair she was just going out and having fun and making memories, and she did all that. All the others had goals they failed at.

Hell, even that aside, Shauna still helps you out more in the story than any of the others by getting you through the puzzle door and then drawing off some Team Flare so you don't have to waste your time with them. Serena/Calem battle alongside you a couple of times but you don't need them in the slightest.

One of the things that made Blue good was that he competed with you in every way, filling the Pokedex included, and then in XY they basically just cut his rival functions up and gave them to bad characters so they all ended up being halfbaked and forgettable
