Hippowdon doesn't have ears because they're evolved and adapted to living, burrowing and swimming through sand.

The little goober rolling onto his back in the pic I have here is what's known as a "Golden Mole"; Golden Moles live within the sahara desert where they spend their entire lives using their large scoop-shaped claws to swim through all that fucking sand.

The other thing you might notice about this little guy is he has no ears. He indeed has no ears, but his hearing is in fact EXQUISITE.
Golden Moles are extremely sensitive to the kinds of specific low-frequency vibrations that travel through sand allowing them to pinpoint prey n' so forth, so not only do they not NEED huge point stupid ears, but it's all the better for it as they can dig unhindered by aformentioned ears.

Please stop this meme, typhlosion had its flames up in HGSS as it followed the trainer around. BW's sprite had typhlosion's flame constantly out as well. People freaked out in XY/ORAS because for all of its history (other than the PMD sidegames, which did the whole "flare when attacking" thing so much better), typhlosion has kept its flame out. And with models reversing that, it looks incredibly dopey and shitty
