new pokemon designs were not that acclaimed and currently a lot of normies are on the market to sell pokemon games to. introducing new forms to classic pokemon from earlier gens seems like a good idea to me.

apart from that personally im very happy with the new designs and also think that alola forms make the pokemon world feel more vivid and connected.

I personally wanted regional variations only on aspect, which actually is what the majority has been begging for.
For me this feels like GF just went "Here! Have a new pokemon with different typing, stats and abilities, but wait! It's not really a new pokemon because we're afraid of reaching 1000 in the dex".

I love the designs (specially since Ice is my favorite type), but I really don't like how they pulled off this idea. It's a neat idea, but not for Pokemon.

I honestly believe it's not that, but rather they likely made a lot of great designs that they knew were already kind of similar to old ones.

New formes allow them to be creative with a lot of old pokemon types, especially simplistic ones they can do a lot with, or pokemon based on concepts they can change region to region.

Sandslash is a cool pokemon, I'm sure you can come up with great designs that would fit it into a bunch of different types. So instead of designing a new pokemon/typing that people are going to say "out of ideas! Too similar to X and Y!" they can just redesign old pokemon.

As I wrote my arguments I realized this might be too much for a thread full of shitpost on a new mechanic that we still don't fully know.

To extremely summarize things up, let's just say that while I like variations, I fear this makes pokemon less unique between them (since now all have the possibility to adapt and be anything), and I believe this was an important part of designing Pokemon.
Variations of this kind may be great for other universes, but doesn't mean is good for all. And the fact that Pokemon avoided doing things that the other hundreds of franchises do kept them differentiated... until now.
It's actually very conflicting for me to be against these variations because I really love the new designs.

I apologize to leave you with such an incomplete answer. Again I just don't think it's the right time to discuss it correctly, as the very few that seem to agree with me tend to use stupid arguments like "SANDslash" or just shitpost, which naturally ends with my side being smothered by more shitposting.

The news are just too recent; I hope we can discuss different opinions about the alola forms when things calm down. For now I'll just wait to see more of them.

If I was to make a sincere guess on how the Alolan Vulpix in particular was born. It probably started with them looking into what they could do for new fairy type pokemon.
Most likely wanting something related to or at least reminiscent of youkai for their fairy types, and from that standpoint they looked over what pokemon they have that already have connections to youkai. And naturally Ninetales caught their attention.
So they made an ice youkai out of Ninetales.

You can still call it lazy or whatever. But I would bet it went down something like that.
