People will cry all day about how Litten3 is practically a rehash of the other fire starters, but literal, actual rehashes of Pokemon are so well recieved. The only thing I can think of to distinguish the two phenomenon is that the idea of "variant pokemon" was a popular and well established idea beforehand whereas the ideas for litten's evolution, for example, were focused in the total opposite direction of the result.

In the past few generations, there has been a lot of complaining from fans about "random" types from Gamefreak.

Types in Pokémon are all ELEMENTS, even the ones that describe physical characteristics, like Bug, Dragon and Ghost. Of course, some elemental characteristics are easier to describe than others (like Fire, Water, etc) but they all have a set of symbolisms and a distinct flavor. Fairy is the playful/whimsical element (Play Rough, Mr. Mime) but it's also the "purity", "light" element (Gardevoir, Xerneas, Tapu Koko), and their designs draw inspiration from things like that, or even some malicious fairies like Mawile. Dragon, when it's not inspired by literal dragons or dragon-puns (like Mega Ampharos and Alolan Exeggutor), is the "legend", "power" type, the big mythical element, contrasted with the delicate and mysterious Fairy.

Nah. It's mimicking what happens to real palmae when they are domesticated. The first only place you can find an Exeggcute is in a Safari(a domestic wildlife preserve) in a region without a tropical climate. If the trailer is anything to go on, Alolan Exeggutor will probably be a physical attacker too. It'd be nice to think that this is because its exterior will be thicker to protect its thinner palm heart. This is because domesticated palms have weak exteriors with thicker hearts, because they are an enjoyed as delicacies and a fatter heart makes a tastier snack. "Regular" Exeggutor is just a weird squat mutant.
