I question the existence of this arc at all. Did a GF/Nintendo exec chase down Kusaka for not including a Battle Tower arc during the GSC part? Was it to stealth-shill an upcoming Ranger game?

It's a bit different though. Crystal came out while the GS arc was still going on, so there was no need to make a separate arc just for Crystal that relies on the new content given by the game (Which with Emerald, the only main thing that wasn't related to the main game was the Frontier)

Yeah, that's the thing. RS Special already had both teams be villainous like what Emerald eventually did.

I mean, even with the lead-in from FRLG, it still felt extremely compressed. I don't have a qualm with OG plotlines, but showcasing the Frontier took a poor back seat to Hideout. It wasn't like in Yellow where there was free reign to draw up an entirely new story because there was practically nothing to showcase except that Yellow doesn't throw Pika out from a ball.

The Platinum arc had the same issues, the Frontier-related parts felt like they were there just to get it over with so that they could move on to better things.

I still think the "name 'em after the games" trend took a huge fall when it came to B/W 2. What happened to the usually punny Japanese?
