So we all know what a defensive Pokemon looks like. It's big, it's bulky, it's slow and probably has a decent attack stat as well.
But what, physically, denotes special defense? What aspect of a Pokemon makes it resistant to special moves? In reality a hard shell would defend you from a flame thrower just as well as a fire punch, so there must be some specific trait that makes a Pokemon special defensive.

It's usually the same aspects that make a Pokémon have a high HP stat, thus being fat. For example, if you look at the stats of Snorlax or Blissey they both posess great HP and Sp.Def
On some cases I'd say it's the thick skin instead of an armor that makes a Pokémon have a high Sp.Def, Goodra would be a good example of that

This comes to mind. High Defense seems to be represented pretty well in tough shells, carapace or armor in Pokemon with higher defenses like Skarmory, Aggron and Cloyster while high Special Defense seems to be more prevalent on Pokemon with more fat or have an appearance which look like attacks would just press and bounce off them like Snorlax, Tentacruel, Goodra and Blissey. Of course you have guys like Ferrothorn, Probopass and Bastiodon which boast high Sp.Def but lack the latter traits, so it's not like a consistent theme.
