I strongly feel starters have certain traditions which the first three (and 2/3rds of the fourth) generations firmly established that the seven in that picture do not follow. Until Empoleon, every starter was gender neutral, had a good deal of simplicity, had simple and clear inspirations, and looked like animals you'd find naturally. I totally feel the same way. I kinda get baffled whenever I see people gushing over Charizard and the other first gen starters. Not that I think they're bad or anything. I just think they're rather plain, and just alright. And I've been playing Pokemon since Blue. I would start off with Squirtle and then box him as soon as I got a Vaporeon.

In my opinion, Pokemon designs have improved over the years. There will always be badly designed ones, but I do feel Pokemon are going in the right direction. But then again, one man's trash is another man's treasure. Who am I to judge? The nice thing is, at the end of the day, only I get to choose who I want to place in my team, and that's something I really appreciate.

I've seen fan art where it's blasting fire attacks and defending itself. Genuinely looks badass to me. I love its wizardly design with the long robes and sleeves. It's my favorite fire starter (dun dun tish).

I love Entermaid too. I've always loved mermaids since I was a kid, so this pokemon's got me super stoked. It's graceful, elegant, and beautifully designed. I love the color scheme. It's very oceanic and reminds me of those beautiful underwater paintings that are very vibrant. Entermaid just reminds me of so many things I love: the ocean, mermaids, swimming. It's turning out to be my favorite water starter!

I disagree on some points. I don't think starters have to necessarily be gender neutral. While it makes sense because they are the first Pokemon you receive and they should be designed to be appealing to as many people possible, this doesn't mean they're not allowed to swing a certain way in either direction. I think we've seen plenty of masculine starter designs that have proven to look pretty amazing, and I don't see why a feminine design is a problem. I think it's very possible to make a Pokemon that is obviously gendered in one direction and still appeal to many people. If people can't handle the femininity in a starter pokemon, then I believe it's those people who need to change, not the Pokemon.

And also, just because a Pokemon looks totally different from its stage doesn't mean it's a bad design. You're not going to say Mother Nature messed up when she created butterflies simply because butterflies look nothing like their caterpillar stages. Pokemon are allowed to change over time, both appearance-wise and theme-wise. That's what makes evolution so exciting and dynamic.

Fuck you man , samurott , empoleon , and the new fire starter look fucking epic. Chesnaught is just passable and the others are horrible , but you must be the only one hating here , at lest put meganium or most of the gen 2 starters.

I just want to add that aesthetic tastes vary from individual to individual, and even culture to culture.

Though I do believe there are objective ways to analyze and critique things such as art, I'm not sure if your points are entirely objective. Things that seem to irk you in some designs are totally fine with me. Personally, I think the spikes on Entermaid's tail help the design to feel more evenly colored, and it helps to make the tail not look so plain.

I trust the designers and developers because they have given us high quality since the beginning. I'm sure they go through a ton of revisions before they decide on one. I remember either Sugimori or Masuda saying that they spend more time on starters than any other. So I can imagine it's a stressful and arduous process. I can honestly say that I have, for the most part, been satisfied with their decisions.

When I'm not happy with a design, I reason that's it's because it doesn't suit my tastes. I understand Game Freak can't always suit my tastes. I'm pretty picky when it comes to Pokemon, and if most Pokemon were designed after my tastes it would not be good for Pokemon as a whole. I appreciate the diversity, even when there are designs out there I don't like.

There's something for everyone. Honestly, when a new Pokemon game is released, I never hope to like all of the new pokemon, or even most of them. Because I know I'm picky, and I should be happy if I like at least as many to make a full team.

I'll be honest. I don't like Minior. I was never a fan of inanimate object Pokemon. I'm sure there's someone out there who loves them, and I love that. But I love Alolan Ninetales. It's so majestic. Totally my style. I'm sure there are others out there saying it's too girly or whatever, but eh, I'm happy. The way I see it, quality over quantity. I like Robingroot and Panthster, but I can live without them. Entermaid is the one I need, and I'm totally happy. That's good enough for me.
