Gen 5 had a lot of great mons (and a lot of terrible ones, granted). Some more edgy than others, but Nintendo tried to make the game more appealing to older children. I never saw the appeal in most of the gen 6 mons though, they're pretty bad imho.

I think the biggest thing about people liking the Ninetales design is that it's literally just that. They like Ninetales. It's people realizing that genwun designs are so strong that they work EVEN WHEN THEY DITCH THE ENTIRE CONCEPT OF THE POKEMON.

Snow Ninetales makes absolutely no fucking sense. It has no relation to the Kitsune/Nine Tailed Fox mythology. Same with Sandshrew, since he isn't designed after any rodent that lives in the snow or extremely cold climates. These designs work only because people like the original or recognize the original.

These designs are GF saying "we are so confident in gen one designs, that these are literally just gen one pokemon with a different color scheme"
