Given how tacked-on Iris felt in BW, she was probably designed specifically so that the anime would be able to use her as a companion. I wouldn't be surprised if they took the anime into account when designing Mallow, which is why Ash is in the concept art.

I'm surprised they haven't done this yet considering how often shounen anime/manga tend to have lead characters who, if not at the beginning, eventually have multiple characters who like the main character.
