In ALL the games the main thing keeping the player going was clearing the gyms and reaching the pokemon league, they could replace it with 8 island leaders but there's only 4 islands and ONE (1) leader per island so it's like having JUST 4 gyms, that's flat-out unnexcusable.

Completely wrong, most casual fans will care because it's a key classic feature that's been there since the first game, they literally CANNOT remove gyms anon, gyms are so iconic for the franchise that pokemon go despite being a barebones game they STILL made sure to add gyms since the beggining since they knew that's what people wanted to see.

if pokemon could survive the transition from GSC to RSE (no day or night, little available old pokemon until FRLG, no backwards compatibility) then it can definitely take a gym leader replacement system. ESPECIALLY when this game is already presenting so many new fun things to do and try out. I think you're overstating the importance of gym battles a bit

There are 4 kahunas and 4 trials. It seems like they just split the 8 gyms into two different flavors. 4 boss battles with trainers and 4 boss battles with pokemon. Your incentive to move forward is to clear all of the tirals and to probably face Alola's pokemon league.

The gyms are essential because you need Boss battles in an RPG. You dont need 8 type specialist who sit in a building all day waiting for you to show up and solve a puzzle. You just need boss battles. Thats what we're being provided.

There are an addition 4 island bosses which are the oversized pokemon.

Thats only if each of these trials take as long as a single gym. But the site literally says, face the trial > Face the Totem Pokemon>Face the grand trial. If that process takes as long as two typical gyms would (note that we're going to have all the same dungeons and diversions as we normally would) then we have the same amount of content. If each of the islands is big enough to encompass more that the span of 2 gyms, suddenly the game has MORE content.

We cant say content is removed until we know how large each island is. We cant compare gym leaders and trials 1 to 1 because they are not the same. if anything gym leaders are the more shallow experience because they're a single building in a town that you pop into once.
