they're not though.

I almost feel as if this is their way of redesigning old Pokemon without explicitly doing it.

They called them new formes, if Yokai Watch can reskin the same cat 500 times, why can't they reskin a few pokemon?

I agree OP, this will only devalue the individual pokemon just like every other jrpg that does this sort of trash.

Well it says the Sandmons are slower than their ground counterparts so I'd assume yes.

Also they mention exeggutor being physical which would suck with current stats
>>
>>27469344
It's an odd case since it has the same BST as Scuther, but different typing and stats.

I think the OP is a bit sarcastic in his point

New type.

They're not? It's still a Vulpix. It doesn't have an entirely different name. It's no more a "new Pokémon" than the Cosplay Pikachus.

Because seeing variations of the same pokemon triggers my autism.

Oh no, how dare they give us the regional variants a load of people wanted. And this is the closest we'll get to delta species. Plenty of people wanted those in the games before the variant thing became popular.

Besides, it doesn't even matter if it's a recolour or a brand new Pokemon. You'd shit on it regardless.
>>
>>27469682
>implying it's easy to detect sarcasm on /vp/ with how many genuine retards are here
>>
>>27470293
No you fucking idiot Scizor is an evolution, iceshrew is a nonsensical lateral "form" change. It makes no sense. Scizor is an evolution, with a steel held item. You'd need to somehow say that over here in this special bush you can find a yellow Scyther that's electric/fairylol, which is a special regional Scyther.

At which point the question becomes why is this electric fairy thing a Scyther at all, Scyther is a fucking mantis. It's a bug. Why not just make a new Pokemon for that thing?

These are not variations. Variations do not alter the typing of a species because POKEMON SPECIES ARE DEFINED BY TYPING
>>

But they are wild creatures/monsters that can change their form via various stimuli.

The idea that they could also change their appearance via surrounding environment over time in order to adapt to things isn't all that far from the realm of understanding.

>>
>>27473479

A species is a population of physiological similar organisms that are capable interbreeding with each other to produce fertile offspring on the genotype level regardless of their phenotypical features.

It doesn't matter if your Vulpix is inherently a fire type or ice type. If the two can still breed with each despite looking slightly different than they are still within the same pokemon species and egg group.

The only difference is that some "barrier" (i.e. the island region) occurred that cause them to change but it wasn't enough to make them outright genetically incompatible.

While Vulpix and Sandshrew are literally just White Vulpix and White Sandshrew.
>>
>>27470076
This is a dumb argument though, evolution and diversity is different from the game mechanic of reskinning. Sure, the lore behind it makes sense, but that doesn't excuse the game mechanic of what it IS.

I love the variations to be honest, but, I know why they're there. It seems like GF wants to buff and change old designs instead of introducing new ones. Which isn't bad in terms of using what you've got - but the whole appeal of having new generations of Pokemon is just to introduce more, if this is the route they're going, we're going to be looking at a cap on Pokemon, and future games that just introduce variants
>>

>if this is the route they're going, we're going to be looking at a cap on Pokemon, and future games that just introduce variants

This is inevitable.

Sooner or later it becomes unfeasible to make more pokemon. Too many niches already filled, too many concepts and designs already tapped. I love new pokemon, but I'd prefer to see smaller numbers of new pokemon with more interesting designs and mechanics alongside regional variants of older pokemon than a more bloated pokedex with multiple redundancies and forced designs.

Naturally this is all subjective though, but to me its the right choice.
>>

>if this is the route they're going, we're going to be looking at a cap on Pokemon, and future games that just introduce variants
Which isn't entirely a bad thing, unlike say Digimon or Yokai Watch, Alolan Forms seem to change everything. Hell, design wise they can't really be considered recolors as much as redesigns.

In any case, it builds the world and finally shows the rules that Pokemon has been mentioning over the years.

>>
>>27475056
But why introduce new ones at all? All or nothing. If they released Alola without the shit starters, new legends, and just made it a bunch of Megas and alola forms, that'd be great

Here's another question, are we going to see a rerelease of all the regions incorporating Megas and variations moving forwards now that the 20th anniversary is over?

I don't care what people say, regional forms should've happened a long time ago. Hell, they're talked about in Gen 1!

Regional forms are way better than megas.

Sure but no matter how deep the lore is, this is a video game franchise - one that has always worked by using different evolutionary method to evolve Pokemon in the Pokemon sense
>>

It would be interesting, but a magma slug evolving into a fire/ice hybrid is kinda hard to explain from an evolutionary point of view, unlike say sandslash and vulpix.
I mean magma simply doesn't work that way at lower temperatures, and it might generate conflicting pokedex entries.

>>27474611
>adaptation is a part of evolution.
True, but in the case of slugma becoming an ice type it'd be such an enormous evolutionary change that it would be a completely different pokemon altogether, unlike say ice vulpix.

>But why introduce new ones at all? All or nothing. If they released Alola without the shit starters, new legends, and just made it a bunch of Megas and alola forms, that'd be great

Why not have new pokemon? New pokemon are exciting. But its getting to the stage where realistically we're going to get them in more moderated amounts.

Sooner or later, probably. I'd expect another Kanto remake at some point.

Because new Pokemon justify the purchase, desu. Nintendo, or more specifically game freak, need to get with the times. Release a big online Pokemon game that can get patched with new variations, the only thing that justifies new regions or remakes is to coalesce all the changes made up to the release of that game. If nothing (((new))) was added, then they ought to keep it on one version. I'm also pissed because i have boxes on boxes of teams in ORAS and now I'm going to have to get all the items back because of Pokemon Bank shenanigans

Lore and mechanics wise in some ways they are. Mew is considered the most recent genetic ancestor of all pokemon (barring legendaries I think) while ditto is capable of viably mating and producing offspring with all pokemon (barring legendaries).

Not necessarily,

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antifreeze_protein

If Slugma adapted to have Antifreeze proteins on the outer most layers of it's body but still kept it's inner most core at a constant warm temperature by way of shivering it cold achieve some odd ice form on it's surface.

>If Slugma adapted to have Antifreeze proteins on the outer most layers of it's body but still kept it's inner most core at a constant warm temperature by way of shivering it cold achieve some odd ice form on it's surface.
You'd have "Magcargo but not really".
You could have an additional evolution which cooled down enough for ice crystals to form on it, but you'd have to pick whether you want a fire/ice or a rock/ice pokemon.

and besides that, the problem of water based organisms regarding freezing temperatures is different compared to that of a magma based organism.
It'd be possible but would most likely require an additional step.

That or it's infected with heat draining ice parasits or something, kinda like parasect

But this shit is going a little too deep for a pokemon game.

"Individuals each play different roles in driving Heatmor, their natural predator, away from their colony."
In real ant colonies there are generally three types of ant -- soldier, worker, and the queen (in addition to some males produced for breeding iirc, it's been a while.) They all look different from one another, they all have different behaviors, and workers are specialized even beyond that with some scouting for food and others eating lots of a food to take it back to feed soldiers, who often can't eat due to their mandibles being too big. (Honeypot ants.)

Soldiers also come out differently sometimes into a genetic mutation that USED to be common in the past, but is now no longer considered necessary by the hive, called super-soldier ants. Sometimes they pop up in the wild, I took a photo of one on my back porch a few weeks ago. They have massive heads that were once used to seal off tunnels in raids by other colonies. Cool shit.

Durant's 'dex entry indicates that Durants are similar to real ants and are specialized for their various roles, we just only see one kind of them. Probably the soldiers, given that Trainers are "invaders" to them.

Just personally I like the variations we're seeing but I do worry that it can lessen the amount of new Pokemon we will get. Still hyped, though.

Clearly Pokemon died in Generation 2.
If you think remixing the old Pokemon some to keep them fresh is lazy, then how lazy isn't it to just import old Pokemon exactly as they were before?
At the very least now the overlap will be both familiar and fresh, instead of just familiar and the same old same old.
