At least Pidgeot was actually released with somewhat of a goal, to protect the young Pidgeys. Primeape was literally handed to some dude and Ash said "brb lol".

I wish the anime would make more references to Ash's history. Nothing major just stuff like his previous league experience, travel companions or comments about his old Pokemon. Takes like 5 seconds out of an episode and makes an episode more interesting
