Did you know that Ash actually kept the Thunder Stone he got in the Lt. Surge episode? Team Rocket later stole it and sold it, saying that if Pikachu evolved he wouldn't be worth stealing anymore.

Not so much that he wouldn't be worth stealing, as it is pikachu evolving would have hit them in their pride. After all, they've spent years chasing this one pikachu, under the belief that it was a special Pokemon, one that is far more powerful than any raichu. Now, we know that the real reason was that pikachu had been supercharged in that episode, but they don't know that. So for team rocket, seeing pikachu be forced to evolve in order to defeat another Pokemon means that it was never worth stealing in the first place. Which means they just wasted a fuckton of time for nothing, when they could have been it doing something else.

There are over 700 episodes at this point, a good number of which show a day passing in the episode, and definitely more than multi part episodes. Unless half the series isn't canon, Ash has to be at least a year older.

They weren't shy about saying how long had passed in the OS. And a year would make sense, since IIRC, right before he started his journey, he was watching the Pokemon league battles before he went to bed. So exactly one year later, they would be coming up again.
