That's the general trend of gen 1. Instead of just making cartoony animals they're more ambiguous animals mixed with dinosaurs. See Kangaskhan, Nidoking, and Rhydon for instance.

It's a Pokemon. Pokemon aren't meant to look exactly/perfectly represent the thing they're based on. They're their own thing. We really don't need another Mantis. Mantis are ugly looking. Hence why gf puts a unique spin on real animals.

Gamefreak has done multiples of animals before though, so there is always hope we could get a real mantis. Scyther is cool, but not as the representation of a mantis.

I think Scyther is one of the best gen I designs, honestly.
And I don't think another mantis is impossible, there are three ducks...

You do realize that there are tons of fucking mantes, some of which are more than enough to warrant gamefreak thinking the designs wouldn't overlap, right? I wouldn't be surprised if we had an orchid mantis by Gen 10. Not to mention that gamefreak is not beyond rehashing animals if they can think of a cool alternative execution, and does so somewhat regularly (Vikavolt vs Pinsir, Dewgong vs Popplio)

To be fair, Scyther was designed in the early 90s. It's not as if they could google what a mantis really looks like, you only have your very vague knowledge of what the bug looks like to go off of.
