I made a color map that shows what cities/routes are connected with one another in ORAS. You'll notice that the only justifiable transitions are the routes around Rustboro, since they're cut off by caves and a forest, Verdanturf because of the tunnel, Sootopolis because it is necessary to dive, and Mauville because it has gates. Do whatever you want with this, I just wanted to share it since I made it by myself.

Lack of gates. The originals had seamless transitions. The remakes could have at least given us gates to make it look better than randomly cutting between routes. Each color shows an "area" and each place it changes means there's a transition that doesn't need to be there.
