I'm not denying it has an influence on it, but it isn't the driving force behind one's passion for most things. The reason people complain about the extrmist genwunner attitude is that it might be a minority, but its a vocal minority GF actualy panders to. Its harmful for the games themselves if GF keeps trying to appeal to those bastards, since it deviates from actual content for the mayority of the fanbase.

I'm not going to go into a discussion about wether or not the newer designs are better or worse, but the overall quality of the games themselves hasn't dwindle like you say it has. The games have began taking a different approach, wether or not thats a good thing is subjective, but the overall quality of the games is higher than ever.

In regards to what makes a "true" fan, its still subjective. I'd say the """"truer"""" fan, imo, is the one that wants only the best for the thing they are a fan of. Interestingly, genwunners might be """"""""""""""truerer"""""""""""""" fans than most /vp/oreons in this regard. Most of their complaints come from a legitimate desire for pokemon to be as good as they remember it to be, even if that idea is twisted by natural human memory distorsion. The bigger fan would be the one that can appreciate the good in the newer games, point out the flaws these have, and conclude that there's a large room for improvement, but that doesn't mean its shit.

I'm a teacher, so I notice that many kids actually have played the original games because they inherited them from their parents or grandparents. Most will say a gen 1 pokemon because their parents never got the later gens. The most common answer I get these days for "what games have you played" is gen 1 and gen 4/5. The latter is for kids who wanted to continue the hobby after playing mom and dad's games.

More often then not, everyone says their favorite is Charizard, Squirtle, or Mewtwo. This is either because they want to be part of the conversation and those are the only ones they know or want "street cred" for playing the originals (actually had to break up a huge argument because one boy was chimping out on a girl who didn't play gen 1, but she played gen 3 onward). I have only met one kid whose favorite was honestly Charizard after playing every single gen.

So, I usually answer honestly (Togekiss) but I tell them my favorite from gen 1 for kids who didn't play beyond (Flareon). Most kids open up about the hobby after that since it's still kind of nerdy, bully material, but when an adult admits to playing everyone is way more accepting. Plus you get cute pokemon drawings and we battle at lunch sometimes.

What I've noticed, the most common "favourite" is eevee.
I dont blame them, its diverce as fuck.

But I've seen many who swear by ditto as well.

My favourite will always be Crobat though, but Ditto will always be in my core group as well.
