No, every region has semi open space areas like this. I doubt it'll feel much different from say, National Park or any sea Route in Hoenn

Mostly, but with places like >>27400971. I mean, I hate all those places besides the village but they were there.

Its the new engine. Everything is so....big. This would literally be Route 113 but with sand floating about instead and more trainers if ORAS was gen 7. Not that this isn't fucking hype, a proper 3D overworld is a godsend. Can't wait for the giant caverns, actually having walls and a ceiling overhead is much more immersive then a vast black nothing.

Rotomdex has waypoints like in most RPGs so it's a safe bet we'll get some huge places for exploration

No it hasn't, the games have become increasingly linear over the years. Only the first 2 games really let you do gyms out of order.

Does anyone else miss gen 3 and 4's engine?
