This. James is fucking god tier when he tries. When he went FLAMING MOLTRES he was pretty fucking good, not to mention the Battle Park episode in Johto where he used Venusaur incredibly well. It helps he's also incredibly likable.

James also takes really damn good care of his bros even though he's part of Team Rocket who throughout the canons are known for being cruel to Pokemon.

Whenever I see Team Rocket go hungry and then see the twerps getting free food and board at pokemon centers I can't help think it's all a criticism on wealth inequality. They never show poor people in pokemon but they show team rocket slaving away doing minimum wage jobs for months just to scrape by enough food to eat. As a whole, Japan idolizes youth, much like how maturity is idolized at least in America/other western countries. As a kid I'd always, always hear kids talk about wanting to be adults. Why? Being an adult sucks ass. There are plenty of positive child-like aspects but generally, being child-like is looked down upon. People set arbitrary rules to "prove" they're adults (one of the most common ones being "if you don't eat x food you aren't an adult, I eat it therefore I'm more mature than you"). I could go on forever but there are a lot of direct and subtle things that we say/do that says being mature > being a kid.

I've never lived in Japan so I can't talk from experience, but it seems to be the opposite there. Unfortunately I can't find the image, but there was a poll and the majority wished they could go back to their youth rather than stay adults. Something along those lines anyway. Then there's kawaii culture, high school years are seen as the best years of their lives, loads of child protagonists in the media, I can't even remember what else. Even if that poll only used a small selection of people, its certainly believable. Childhood is definitely seen in a different kind of light there.

I think the thing with Jessie's backstory is that it isn't really touched upon in the show. I mean, there's SOME, like the episode with chansey, but I think it would have been better for us to be able to see that being a Team Rocket member is quite literally in her blood. Maybe show that she had tried to fight destiny by trying to be a Pokemon nurse, or by being an actress, and each time was dealt a crushing failure. And with each failure she had to return to the only home she knew - Team Rocket.

That being said, if James were permitted to grow in the same way that ash had been in sinnoh, I could see him faring as well, if not slightly better. Why are they still with Team Rocket again

Guys. Hear my pitch for the Gen 7 anime.

Ash goes to Alola because that's a fucking fact of nature, get over it.
Ash meets up with Selene, because male player characters don't exist. Predictible.
The third member of the crew? James.

How? Team Rocket gets sent on "vacation". Jessie and Meowth are poorfags, so they have to stay home, but James' family hears about this, and takes him on vacation to Alola forcibly. In the first few episodes, Ash finds James, who's escaped his families' vacation home. The two are about to square off when Team whoever-the-fuck shows up and starts wrecking shit. The heroes save the day, and the tense moment resolved, James finally communicates that he is on vacation from his duties, and wants to get away and just see the region. James promises no Pika-napping, and Ash reluctantly agrees, on the grounds that James still has an allowance from his family to buy food, because we don't have a cook.

James winds up grabbing all of the cute shitmons like he usually does (Cutiefly and Mimikyu, and probably Bewear are likely), and sees the sights.

Meanwhile, towards the second half, Jessie and Meowth finally get to Alola somehow to find James. They team up with Jessiebelle or something to do so, making for a drama arc as they try to convince James to come back, while James just wants to tour the region peacefully.
