Pokemon don't lay eggs. The eggs are protective shells for the infant Pokemon made from nesting material. That's why Pokemon are already grown enough to fight when it hatches.

There are no "birds" in Pokemon world, only Pokemon. More interesting question is, if humans and Pokemon share a common ancestor, do humans lay eggs too in the Pokemon world?
