It has a lot to do with what you said about Charizard being one of the first designs. Put it on a timeline.

Charizard was the first dragon we got that wasn't really a dragon. Dragonite was the lone dragon representative but came across as too innocuous. Kingdra was more regal and wasn't even a real dragonic design. Salamence was the first ferocious dragon line.

I feel like this is apparent to most people well-rooted in the series, but newer fans are quicker to call it bland since more recent dragons have something to stand out like Haxorus with its axes or Hydreigon with its puppets or Noivern with its speaker ears.

Your appreciation of Donphan tells me you like arbitrary things like wheels/rolling weaved into animals/objects on top of the element they represent. But not everyone is like that. Element + animal/object is fine on its own, e.g. Rapidash, Feraligatr.

I'm not religious. I just like particular designs, it's not even about their power. I threw in the Legends because in Gens 3-6 my favorite designs were all Legends, but I don't like saying that so I added my favorite non-Legends.

I disagree. I think I found 5 the hardest.
Gen 2 had a lot of okay designs but very few that I would consider on my list of favorites. My short list for generation 1, 5 and 6 were all quite long. I believe gen 2 and 4 were both pretty short and 3 was the shortest.
