Were any of them nicknamed? What was on the Hall of Fame?
This may give you some insight on what kind of player had the game before you found it. It may have been a speedrun though the Swords are really out of the way in the original BW games (when compared to being shown all of them mid-obligatory-routes in BW2)
Could you check the guy in Castelia to see how many trades were done on this run? This may ultimately be a trade cart that was only ran through to send out a few choice catches (if there's a trade limitation on legends during GenV this may be more likely)

There were 4 or 5 USA distributions of Mew, one or two in Canada and 2 or 3 in Europe.
It's unlikely that he got it by event but it's a possibility.
In Gen I one of the only hints you have to its legitimacy is the OT. If it's YOSHIRA or YOSHIRB it's from an event.
