In gen 1 stadium it was actually kind of like some sort of unsubtantiated like... shadow person, and when it fainted the "body" disappeared leaving the hair and dress to fall to the ground. Don't know if this is an official interpretation or not though since now instead of being pure black to imply total darkness, it's purple and clearly has a shape and form, and that animation wasn't re-enacted for XY so who knows. Maybe that was just a liberty taken by the devs that made the stadium models.
