I think the reality of it is, outside a handful of really popular ones, we're probably never going to see Ash's old Pokemon battle again. It's been around 6 years since some of them were used in the Sinnoh League (and even longer for others) so the newer audience probably don't know or really care about them.

I mean the last time Kingler appeared (not including the BW photo) was mid Hoenn and the last time he actually battled was some water cup during Johto. iirc, Oak and his mom went Ash for the first episode of BW and he contacted Oak a few times during his journey. Oak also appeared a bit during the post-league stuff where he caught a Rotom which has become the new Muk. Ash's also contacted him once during XY. His mom only appeared in the final BW episode and has yet to cameo on XY (which is odd since we're halfway through the league now).

As for his old Pokemon, Charizard re-joined his party during the post-league BW stuff to pander to nostalgiafags. Bulbasaur, Muk and Tauros also had cameos during BW but the rest of his Pokemon haven't appeared at all apart from in a brief photo that his mom hung in his room or some shit.

None of them do, with the expectation of Pikachu (since he has been with Ash since the beginning). XYZ has been bland since the start when the writers decided to make Ash "edgy and badass" there hasn't been as much funny stuff in the show as there used to be. I'm more concerned with the fact that Ash, a guy who has beat dozens of gyms, obtained numerous badges, and has even gone through several leagues (even finalizing in some) is allowed to participate in gym battles through new regions. Even if he starts fresh, on record (and in writing), he's an extremely talented and experienced trainer, he should, by default, be allowed into leagues even in other regions, since gyms are meant to test the trainer to see if they are competent and skilled enough to handle the league, so whats the point of testing someone whose already cleared multiple gym runs?
