Gems were huge in fifth gen doubles. Like, thr most important items huge. In a fast-paced environment, getting a 50% boost on a move can be game-changing.

Also, it was used on Unburden and Acrobatics mons.

That doesn't even look like a slot for a stone. The dark grey parts look like design engravings and the white part in the middle looks like a flat surface.
