Not a rival =/= we will literally never battle her, she just wont take a starter. If she did take one, we definitely would have seen it by now. There is no reason to hide it, they weren't afraid to let you know that Hau took a starter.

They're hiding her team (we will obviously battle her at some point at least once, likely later in the game once her story role comes to fruition) because it is either entirely, or partially, comprised of Pokemon that haven't been officially revealed yet. Think anon, think.

The boat scene is you, Hau, and she traveling to the next island for the very first time and obviously they have to make a huge bombastic deal about this, like that "simultaneous first step" you took with your shitter friends in XY's opening.

Yes, she does dislike battling, and the Treehouse event reaffirmed this pretty clearly when she appeared in a cutscene (that's also where they briefly mentioned her post-game role), but it's obviously lip service to keep things hush hush. You will most definietly battle her at some point, again likely later in the game, it's silly to think otherwise. Her dislike of battling just means you will not battle her as often as Hau, and that she won't take a starter but have a different team.

Hau having the weaker starter but still being the "main" rival is an interesting change of pace, and a lot about S/M seems to be changing the conventions of what we expect from the series.
