Working on a darker monster tamer/breeder inspired by Pokemon and DQM with a heavy focus on breeding.

I know it's important for every monster to be unique - feel like it's your own, so I'm trying to balance removing RNG shenanigans while still not having every monster of a species identical.

I just know that the whole reason people carry their pokemon across the gens is because it's unique - yours.

The entire Pokemon breeding system is heavily limiting and annoyingly random. You should definitely take DQM as your main inspiration, breeding in those games was entirely deterministic, you always knew what you were going to get out of the egg (except when breeding rare monsters for the first time.) The stats of the babies were always IIRC half the average of the parents, and there was no random factor in their growths. Compare that to Pokemon's heavily obfuscated mess where the baby is at the whims of the RNG and you need to hatch dozens of eggs to get one acceptable 'mon. And to even find out it's good you have to suss out tons of hidden numbers. It's ridiculous.

Take any ideas from Pokemon's breeding you find interesting, but use DQM as a skeleton. It's a much deeper and more satisfying system overall. Breeding in Pokemon has always felt like an afterthought.

I'm trying to put in as many options for breeding and fusion (items, settings, configurations) so you can entirely control the breeding process.

In this game the learnsets, stats, skills, typing are all passed down. When you breed Monsters they mix, creating a new species.

just as an example, on the far-left here is the base Monster and the right forms will be forms the offspring takes depending on the other parent. The palette is also pulled from the other parent so you can see things can get fairly diverse.

Sounds a lot like the system in Jade Cocoon. Dunno if you've ever played that game but you should, it's short and easy but it's another game with a heavy focus on the breeding system.

Also your spritework is very nice, looks like a professional GBC game.

Thanks! I do half the monster designs and another team member does the other half (including that one). He's better than me but I'm really glad to have him on-board.

I feel like hardcore monster breeder genre fans are niche - most of the recent DQM didn't even come over to north america, but I'm ok with a small niche fanbase, I'd rather work to please a niche than try to appeal to everyone.

Don't remind me, I might have a rage aneurysm.

One suggestion I have is an item or something that lets you keep a monster's original appearance- say I want to breed Chain Chomp Eel up there to get new moves or better stats, but don't want to lose his rugged good looks. I could slap a Neverstone on him and the baby would come out looking the same. Maybe have two separate items- one for keeping the exact appearance, and one to only change the palette. Both should be easy to implement.

One of the best things about DQM was how you could breed any random shitmon into a wrecking machine if you were dedicated. You should be able to do the same in this.

any particular way to account for the time-intensive aspects? Are you going to have to wait a day for them to breed, can you speed it up (like # of steps), etc.? Or is it all instant?

There's something fairly interesting (in my biased opinion of course), you can breed two monsters together to get an Egg that will hatch into a level 4 monster, or, if you're a very serious breeder you can turn up the heater in the breeding room and you get an embryo instead.

The embryo is only level 1 and can't fight (it will die if it gets hit so you have to level it up for it to turn into it's real self) but it lets you check palette/moves/stats/typing without having to wait for an egg to hatch.

You can also do fusion, so if you breed a level 20 and a level 30 you'll get a combined level 25 monster. The tradeoff of course is that you lose both parents - unlike breeding.

You can fuse/get an egg instantly, still working out how long an egg should take. I want it to be fast though, I love breeding.

No, they're very intentional. I toyed with procedural early on but I found it limiting. The creatures created were usually generic, and even if they weren't they had very generic poses, you know what I mean? In a 3D world you could better pose things but with spriting everything has to be intentional.

Also make a lot of breedable traits. I always liked fact you have uniqye monster traits but then you could breed them on other monsters

I agree. That's not in-game, I had to whip that up quick for the trailer. The breeding and fusion are planned out and ready programming-wise, but they aren't implemented visually yet.

Exaple: There is a monster that lives in Lava so it has Fireproof skin trait

Do you mean like attacks, or abilities? Or just stats in general?

Here are the types:

Psycho
Brute
Will
Relentless
Unstable

It's a bit simpler rocks-paper-scissors than pokemon, but I feel like it works.

Ah, yeah, Abilities are called Quirks in this, and you can pass down any of them.

Any aspect you find on one monster attack, stats, appearance, quirks can be bred onto any other monster.

I always think abilities and natures should be two different things, and personaly I hate how badly natures are pictured and used in Pokemon. I wish the natures comletly changed the style of monster gameplay - because obviously lazy monster should be much different than brave one. They could have few attacks that could be learned JUST by having a that nature - Like only Lazy mon can be find with Slack off move.

upper-left is about 10 ft

upper-right is 11-12ft (and drowns people for fun)

And the bottom is, well massive. Haven't thought about a concrete number. He's at least 500ft long as is responsible for "The Bloop".

Interesting. Also, there's an in-game tamogatchi you can download a non-party monster onto. Could be some minigames on that too.

It just gives them more exp with each step, kinda like a poke-walker.

The music in that trailer and some of the stuff going on reminded me a little of the Mother games.
The only thing I ask of this entire game that would make it perfect in my eyes are unique ways to get some monsters. In Pokémon I fucking loved porygon just because of how hard it was to get, but not being too overpowered or anything.
It looks amazing right now. Please update with progress frequently.

I'm so glad you liked Porygon - I did too.

I'm putting in a ton of monsters like that, it's one of my favorite things too.

Take a look at this guy, his name is Laz and he's the unstable type. If you breed him you may get the Relentless, Brute, Psycho, Will or even more Unstable variant.

But he's a monster that was infected by an evil fungus that killed him and now animates the corpse.

However, you can find odd items in the game, like a Antifungal medication. If you use that on him you'll get a non-fungus version that may be radically different, and you may even find a knock-off Antifungal that actually has pro-fungal properties. See where I'm going?

I want to have players find odd items like this and really want to try it out and see what monsters it may affect, many times they'll have to read into the lore a bit to find out what to use it on.

I want to put as much of this stuff in as a I can.
